Just as Kleenex has become synonymous with tissues, the brand name “Botox” has become synonymous with neurotoxin injections. There are a variety of different brands of neurotoxin: Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport, and Xeomin. Botulinum toxin type A is the primary active ingredient in each product and they are all used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Neurotoxin injections relax muscles in the face that are typically responsible for repetitive movements that, in turn, lead to wrinkling of the skin such as frown lines, forehead wrinkles, crowsfeet (wrinkles around the eyes), and 11’s (wrinkles between the eyebrows). It can also be used to reduce jaw tension, minimize teeth grinding, and provide headache or migraine relief! Neurotoxin requires routine maintenance every 3-4 months to maintain results. You can anticipate your neurotoxin to begin wearing off at 8 weeks at which point your muscle function will slowly begin to return.

The number of units needed depends on a variety of factors such as the area of treatment, strength of the muscle, your individual anatomy, and even your metabolism. A general rule of thumb for first time neurotoxin patients is between 45-55 units.

Be sure to make your appointment at least 3 weeks prior to any major events, the face is very vascular and bruising is always possible! Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours prior to your appointment. Avoid taking ibuprofen, Aleve, and NSAIDS for 1 week prior to your appointment as these medications thing the blood and increase the risk for bruising. Arrive with a clean face and little to no makeup (but we’ve got makeup remover if you need it!).
If it is my first time treating you, you can anticipate your appointment to take approximately 30-45 minutes. Once you are an established patient, you can anticipate your appointment time to be approximately 15-20 minutes (if not less!).

Neurotoxin treatments should be scheduled every 3-4 months to maintain optimal results.
-
Nope! You can stop neurotoxin injections at any time. Once the effect of the medication wears off (3-4 months) your facial muscles will return to their natural state.
